Lois Yarger

Lois Ann Yarger (Patrick), a long-time resident of Atlantic, Iowa, died on Sunday, February 14, 2021, at the Heritage House surrounded by her family at the age of 93 years, 3 months, 7 days.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with family present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., and rosary at 6:30 p.m. all held at Hockenberry Funeral Home, Atlantic, IA.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 19, 2021, at Saint Peter & Paul Catholic Church, burial to follow at Atlantic Catholic Cemetery. Following the committal service, a reception will be held at Hockenberry Funeral Home’s Community Room. Mask and social distancing are requested in attendance of all services.

She was born November 8, 1927, in Petersen, Iowa, to Percy Charles Patrick and Mary Evelyn (Mae) Patrick (Corcoran). Lois was one of five daughters born to Percy and Mae; Margaret Atherton, Kathryn O’Brien, Florence Patrick and Norma Althoff. Lois graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1949 where she received her teaching degree. She furthered her education by attending Drake University.

Lois was united in marriage to Bruce Orville Yarger on February 1, 1951, in Royal, IA. They resided the majority of their 62 years of married life in Atlantic, Iowa. Lois and Bruce were the parents to five children: Brad Owen, Brent Charles, Teresa Ann, Doreen Jane and Janet Lynn. She taught grades kindergarten through third for a total of twelve years in Clarion and Atlantic, Iowa. She was a substitute teacher in the Atlantic Community Schools for fourteen years, in grades K-12, elementary and senior high art, and disabled children at Pymosa school. ​ Lois retired from REM where she worked with handicapped adults for ten and a half years.

She has been a member of SS Peter and Paul parish for the past 67 years. As a member, she taught religion classes for six years, was the Elementary Religious Coordinator for two years, served on the Religious Education Committee, Parish Council, and coordinated wedding and funeral receptions for a total of twelve years. Lois was a wonderful woman, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She valued kindness and loving one another above all. She reminded family and friends to love one another as God has loved you. Her faith was ever present throughout her life and guided her during her last years. She will be greatly missed for her supportive guidance, her loving heart and open arms, her joy for the simple things in life, her wry sense of humor, her smile, her love of birds, and her strong faith in the Lord.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bruce, son Brad, parents, grandparents, sisters and brothers-in-law.

Lois is survived by her children and their spouses; Brent and Joan Yarger of Atlantic, IA, Teresa and James Lane of Ames, IA, Doreen and Tim Koch of Neola, IA, and Dr. Janet Yarger of St Louis, MO; her grandchildren, Kelly Yarger of Pace, FL, Brent M. Yarger of Atlantic, IA, John (Wendy) Hansen of Atlantic, IA, Clint (Danielle) Hansen of Atlantic, IA, Andrea Hansen of Omaha, NE, and Ily (Katie) Lane of Ames, IA; her great-grandchildren, Alan Pappal, Kaylee Pappal, Stephan Pappal, Taylor Hansen, Skyler Handlos, Josie Handlos, Philomena Lane, Kalliope Lane and Paytin Hansen; and many wonderful nieces, nephews and dear friends.
