Lowene Jane Christensen

September 4, 1929 — October 12, 2020

Lowene Christensen, the daughter of Ethel Duling Christensen, was born September 4, 1929 in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, Iowa. She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Gray, Iowa in 1946. Lowene attended rural schools in Lincoln Township before attending Audubon and Gray High Schools, graduating in 1947. During her school years, she played basketball and enjoyed reading. She earned many awards for reading and was quite proud about that. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College, also in 1947, and taught school.

On December 11, 1948, Lowene was united in marriage to Glen O. Christensen at the First Methodist Church in Des Moines, Iowa. They had three children: Ron, Bruce and Sue. Glen and Lowene farmed near Viola until 1958 when they began renting a farm five miles northwest of Audubon, Iowa. They purchased this farm in the mid-1960s. Lowene was an active partner with Glen in their farming operation for more than 50 years.

Lowene was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. She was involved in women’s groups and taught Sunday school. Lowene made it a priority to see that her children were involved in the church taking them to Sunday school, worship services, and Bible School.

Lowene loved animals. As a child, the dogs and cats on the farm were her playmates. Her compassion for animals was obvious as she cared for the livestock on the farm. And she loved her cats—Babe was her favorite!

Lowene had a special place in her heart for her family. Her children will always cherish memories of working alongside her on the farm and for her never-ending support of them. Her grandchildren have fond memories of “sleepovers” and Christmas—a season that Grandma made so special. Grandma’s homemade bars, which to this day, no one can replicate, were always provided and quickly eaten. And, Lowene was the designated provider of her “famous” potato salad at almost every family gathering.

One of the special memories our family will always cherish was celebrating her 90th birthday last year—a celebration that included her entire family. She was so happy and so proud!

Lowene was preceded in death by husband, Glen, in 2014 and her mother and step-father, Carl Christensen, and her grandparents, Bert and Margaret Duling.

Survivors include her children: Ron and wife Nancy Christensen of Omaha, Nebraska; Bruce Christensen and Deb Layland of Audubon, Iowa; and Sue and husband Jim Weitl of Carroll, Iowa; her grandchildren: Jennifer and husband Jason Nagler of Olathe, Kansas; Jeff and wife Lindsay of Omaha, Nebraska; Traci and husband Chad Nimmo of Adel, Iowa; Trisha and husband David Oberhoffer of Adel, Iowa; Tiffany and husband Benjamin Dudley of Treynor, Iowa; Angie Weitl of Carroll, Iowa; and Cory and wife Danielle Weitl of Carroll, Iowa; 16 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

So many are grateful for her life. Lowene leaves a rich legacy and now lives eternally with God.
