Lucas David Esbeck, age 35 of Atlantic, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 22, 2025, at his home. He was born March 15th, 1990, in Omaha, NE, to Lee and Jane Esbeck of Elk Horn, IA. Lucas graduated from Elk Horn-Kimballton High School in 2008. He graduated from Northwest Iowa Community College in 2010 as an accredited Heavy Equipment Operator.
His interest for heavy equipment came at a young age when he helped his dad run the backhoe for the family plumbing business. Once accredited, Lucas worked for over ten years at Murphy Bros. Heavy Equipment in Anita, IA, operating several different types of equipment. His colleagues at Murphy’s gave him the nickname “Stretch”. He spent a short time working for Elite Octane, Atlantic, IA, before returning to Murphy Bros., where he was employed at the time of his passing.
His interests included playing disc golf, custom dyeing discs, video games, mountain biking, going on adventures with his children/family, and creating unique flavors of pickles and smoked meats. Even on a busy day, Lucas found the time to capture the beauty of sunrises and sunsets with his eye for photography.
What made Lucas happiest and most proud was being dad to his children. At a crucial time in the lives of his three older children, he fought to keep them in his home, under his watchful eye. He was further blessed to add a fourth child as well.
Lucas is survived by his four children, Dominic, Riley, Reed, and Athena, his parents Lee and Jane Esbeck of Elk Horn, IA, his sister Angela and her husband Joshua Wordlaw of Lincoln, NE, fiancé Jennifer Kallstrom of Omaha, NE, and many cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.
His love, warmth, and gentle spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents Leander and Mary Jean (Schechinger) Zimmerman, of Harlan, IA and his grandparents Burton and Jeanene (Boyer) Esbeck, of Elk Horn, IA.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic.
