Marilyn Bernhardt

Marilyn Mae (Dory) Bernhardt was born October 21, 1931, in Cumberland, Iowa, to Valera (Edwards) and Clark C. Dory.

Marilyn grew up in Cumberland, attended Cumberland Community Schools, and graduated from Cumberland High School in 1949. On September 4, 1949, Marilyn married Richard Bernhardt. They had three children: Sheryl, Vickie, and Terry. In 1952, Richard and Marilyn bought and moved to a farm south of Anita, where they resided for almost 40 years. In addition to farming, Richard owned Bernhardt Construction and did carpentry work for almost 50 years. In 1989, Richard and Marilyn moved to Atlantic. In 2013, they moved to Kansas City, MO.

Marilyn was a homemaker and worked at different jobs at different times during the years, including Publishers News in Atlantic, and Avon. She loved her family, church, traveling, camping, board games, and visiting with friends and relatives. Marilyn and Richard were members of the Calvary Baptist Church in Walnut, IA.

Marilyn entered into eternal life on January 22, 2019, at the age of 87 years, at McCrite Plaza, Briarcliff in Kansas City, Missouri.

Marilyn is survived by two daughters, Sheryl L. Huffman of West Des Moines, IA, Vickie and her husband, Jim Richmond of Chico, CA, and one son, Terry R. Bernhardt and his wife, Kimberly, of Kansas City, MO; 6 grandchildren, Mindy DeBolt of Devil’s Lake, ND, Marcy Davis of Urbandale, IA, Charlie Gipple and wife Noelle of Johnston, IA, Chad and wife Kari Gipple of Mingo, IA, Ethan Haynes and Emma Haynes of Kansas City, MO; 6 great-grandchildren, Eric and Zeah DeBolt, Tyler Elder, Brayton, Brody and Briggs Gipple, Seth and Matthew Gipple. Marilyn is also survived by 4 sisters, Beverly Lamansky and husband Roy of Fairfield, IA, Rosemary Schrier of Atlantic, IA, Shirley Ruge and husband Dick of Bellevue, NE, Sandra Schlotzhauer and husband Don of Atlantic, IA; and brother, Clark A. Dory and wife Karen of Perry, IA; and numerous nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Bernhardt; and sisters, Nancy Darby and Margaret Hardy.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 27, 2019, at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa. Visitation with family will be held following the service at a lunch in Hockenberry’s community room.
