Max Uhlman

September 5, 1928 — August 22, 2015

Max Donald Uhlman, 86, of Adair, Iowa, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2105, at the New Homestead in Guthrie Center, Iowa.

Max was born September 5, 1928, in Adair County, Iowa, to John and Anna (Wedemeyer) Uhlman. He grew up in Adair and Guthrie counties and attended school until the eighth grade. Max joined the US Army in 1950 and served in Germany. He was married to Beverly Leib on January 15, 1956, and they enjoyed 54 years of marriage until her death in 2010. Max farmed and lived most his life in Guthrie County.

He was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Adair, where he served as church elder and trustee. Max was also a member of the Turkey Creek Watershed Conservation project and an early member of the Adair Conservation Club. He was most proud of being a veteran and his time in Germany serving in the US Army.

Max enjoyed woodworking, deer hunting, feeding the birds and squirrels, as well as gardening. He liked sharing all the produce with his friends and family in Adair, often delivering sweet corn and pumpkins for people to enjoy. In the last few years, he also enjoyed listening to his scanner and reading local newspapers to keep up on all of the activity in the community.

Max was patient, easy going, and kind...with a strong work ethic, wonderful sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye. He was a true family man who cherished his wife, children and grandchildren. The hi-light of his week was family time on Sundays when all of his loved ones would gather at his home to share many conversations and priceless memories. He was always willing to pass along words of wisdom to those who asked...including his favorite quote, "You never had it so good."

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; his parents, John and Anna; parents-in-law, Otis and Ruth Leib; brothers, Phil Uhlman, Sr. and Jack Uhlman; sister-in-law, Carolyn Uhlman; and brothers-in-law, Delos Farnsworth Jr., Norman Kading and Roger Leib.

Max is survived by his children, Kathy (Alvin) Sheeder, Mark Uhlman and Cynthia (Randy) Ruth all of Adair, IA and Jolene (Steve) Sisler of Anita, IA; grandchildren, Kirk (Kate) Sheeder of Coon Rapids, MN, Brian Sheeder of Greenfield, IA, Cory Sheeder of Anita, IA, Whitney (Brandon) Harper of Adair, IA and Quinn Ruth of Adair, IA; sister, Gladys Kading of Adair, IA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clifford and Dorothy Leib of Guthrie Center, IA, Rosemary Leib of Panora, IA and Bill and Joy Scarbrough of Harriman, TN; along with several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Adair, IA.
