Merle Anholt

Merle W. Anholt, 98, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at the Heritage House in Atlantic.

He was born August 10, 1918, in Boxholm, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Pearl (Carlson) Anholt. He was raised in Boxholm and moved to Glen Ellyn, IL in 1954. Merle was united in marriage to Mary Ann Hurtig on July 21, 1945, in Chicago, IL.

Merle worked in Industrial Development as a manager for Santa Fe Railroad in Chicago for 42 years. He was a current member of the Lions Club and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Merle enjoyed downhill skiing, tennis, golf and traveling. Mary Ann and Merle moved to Atlantic, Iowa, in 2011, to be close to their daughter, Sharon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Pearl Anholt; his daughter, Victoria; two brothers and one sister.

Merle is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary Ann Anholt of Atlantic, IA; his daughter, Sharon (Richard) Woodward of Lewis, IA; his brothers, Joe (Evelyn) Anholt of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Robert (Marilyn) Anholt of Apple Valley, MN; his grandchildren, Christy (Scott) Ulbrich of Maple Grove, MN, Ryan (Lisa) Woodward of Lewis, IA, Lindsey (Austin) Bullington, of Yorkville, IL, and Oriana (Michael) Brandt of Austin, TX; his great-grandchildren, Annika Ulbrich, Malena and Reid Woodward, Joslyn, Jackson and Jasper Bullington, and Arlo and Zeke Brandt; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 23, 2016, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa. A time for visitation will take place after the memorial service during the luncheon, also at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

A private interment of cremains will take place in Oakwood Cemetery in Lewis, Iowa, at a later date.
