Meta Hemphill

Meta Hemphill, 91, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.

Meta Green Hemphill was born June 19, 1924, to Joseph and Edna (Chancellor) Green in Osceola, Missouri. She became a Christian at an early age. She was married to Edgar Hemphill of Griswold, IA, on February 10, 1945, in Omaha, NE. She taught Sunday school many years and at the time of her death, was a member of the First Baptist Church in Atlantic.

Meta and Edgar farmed in the Griswold and Elliott area until 1988. They also owned the Arlington Hotel. She worked at the Griswold Care Center for 17 years before the two of them moved to Atlantic in 1999.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Joseph and Edna Green; three brothers, Bill, Bud and Paul; and twin sister, Mildred Smith.

Those surviving Meta are her husband, Edgar Hemphill of Atlantic, IA; her four children, Larry (Marletta) Hemphill and their children, Jessica, Erica and Daniel, Garry (Mary) Hemphill and their children, Amanda and Alyssa, Marlene (Mark) Hansen and their children, Brittany and Chris, James (Lisa) Hemphill and their children, Emily, Logan, Olivia and Carter. Also surviving are 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m., Monday, March 14, 2016, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa, with burial in the Griswold Cemetery, Griswold, Iowa.

Visitation and refreshments with family will be in Hockenberry's Community Room following the committal service in Griswold.
