Paul L. Wessling, 86, of Anita, Iowa, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2017, at Caring Acres Nursing & Rehab in Anita.
Paul was born August 5, 1930, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Carroll, Iowa, to Leonard A. and Bess (Buton) Wessling. He grew up in Carroll County where he attended country school. He graduated from Breda High School in 1947.
On November 8, 1951, he joined the US Army. Paul served in Korea and was discharged on August 7, 1953, at which time he served with the Army Reserve.
He worked for Collisons Brothers. Paul was married to Jane Broich on May 7, 1955, in Maple River, Iowa. In 1964, they moved near Anita where he farmed until the fall of 1999, when he and Jane moved to Anita. Paul had a passion for farming. He also worked at the Anita Farmers’ Cooperative and for the Farmers’ Cooperative in Cumberland until 2010. Paul also did custom corn shelling.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #210, both in Anita. Paul was also very involved with 4-H for numerous years.
Family and faith were very important to Paul as was the flag and his country. Paul helped with bingo at the Anita American Legion for over forty years. He also enjoyed gardening, mowing, and playing cards with family and friends. Paul was always ready with a joke to share.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jane; a daughter, Patty; a grandson, John Paul Jones; brothers, Robert and Leon; and sisters, Barbara and Judy.
Paul is survived by his children, Cathy (David) Jones of Cumberland, IA, Steve (Lana) Wessling of Anita, Mary (Mike) Hosfelt of Massena, IA, Ann (Ben) Harris of Anita, IA, Jim (Dianne) Wessling of Anita, IA; a son-in-law, Rhett South of Cumberland, IA; grandchildren, Robert Wessling, Trevor (Christa) Wessling, Laura (Justin) Rumple, Will (Tara) Erickson, Spenser (Anna) Erickson, Eric Watson, Tyler Watson, Haley (Joe) Wollum and Ethan Wessling; step-grandaughters, Jessica Brown, Dana Wasson and Brittany Harris; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at Hockenberry Family Care in Anita.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anita. Burial will in the Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, with Military Rites by the Anita American Legion Post #210.
Memorials may be left to the family’s wishes for designation at a later date.
