Anita

Raymond Curtis Schellenberg, 92, of Anita, IA, passed away May 10, 2025, at his home in Anita.

Ray was born May 1, 1933, in his grandmother’s home in Scribner, Nebraska. He was one of three children born to Fred W. and Agnes A. (Lahmann) Schellenberg. In 1943, Ray moved to a farm northeast of Anita with his parents and his sister Deloris.

Ray attended a country school that was 3/4 mile west of his farm for grades 5-8 before attending high school in Anita. Ray graduated from Anita High School in 1950. After graduation, Ray farmed with his father except for a few years when Ray served in the Army’s occupation forces in Germany.

Ray married Janice Taylor on January 8, 1956. The couple built a house right next to Fred’s house on the family farm. Ray and Janice had two sons and two daughters.
In addition to farming, Ray and Janice owned and operated the Dairy Inn ice cream shop (now known as the Sweet Spot) in the 1970s. Ray also worked part-time for Pelgas in Adair. Ray helped build the greens on Crestwood Hills Golf Course and served on the board of the golf course.

Ray retired from farming and moved to an acreage just north of Anita in 1992. After Janice’s death, Ray married Carolyn Otteman Hall on June 8, 2002.

At various times in his life, Ray was active in fishing, bowling, golfing, and card playing. More recently Ray enjoyed morning coffee with the gang at the Weather Vane Cafe, dancing with his favorite partner Connie Roberts, and maintaining the acreage.

Ray is survived by his two daughters (Susan Schellenberg of Cedar Rapids, IA and Sandra Schrieber of Emmetsburg, IA), one son (Lyle Schellenberg of Cedar Rapids, IA), two stepdaughters (Patti Schobert and Jacki Rempel), two stepsons (Mark Hall and Matthew Hall), three grandchildren (Ray Schrieber of Emmetsburg, IA, Bryan Schrieber of Emmetsburg, IA, and Samanth Schrieber of Cedar Rapids, IA), and three great-grandchildren as well as step-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents (Fred and Agnes Schellenberg), his sister (Deloris Bissell), his brother (Robert Schellenberg), his first wife (Janice), his second wife (Carolyn), his son (David Schellenberg), and his son-in-law (Jerry Schrieber).

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, May 16, 2025, at Anita Congregational United Church of Christ in Anita, Iowa, with Pastor Russell Hansen officiating.
