Richard (Dick) Lee Wittmuss, age 82, passed away June 21st, 2026. He was a resident at the Heritage House in Atlantic Iowa.

He was born in Iowa City Iowa on March 10th, 1944; to his parents Gerald Wittmuss and Rose (McKeane) Wittmuss.

Richard was raised and went to school in Atlantic Iowa. He graduated from Atlantic Senior High School in 1962.

While growing up, Richard had the typical jobs kids have, paper route, painting houses, etc. After graduating from high school, he entered the Air Force. He spent 3+ years in service to our country.

He returned to Atlantic where he met his bride to be. Richard married Peggy (Wiechman) on June 3rd, 1966. Their marriage of 55 years produced three children. Maria (Turchan), Andrea (Gregory) and Troy Wittmuss.

His first job out of the military was working for Lang’s Mobile Service in Atlantic. His second job was with Hoegh Oil in Atlantic. He stayed with them until they became McAtee. He heard about a great opportunity with the City of Atlantic and applied. He got the job and that is where he spent the next 30+ years as a senior auto technician. He retired in 2009.

Richard loved to camp, fish, and fix just about anything! Richard and the family could be found camping just about every weekend possible. Competitions for the most fish caught, campground fish fries, playing cards/dominos with camping friends, and quiet evenings by the campfire were some of his favorite moments.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife Peggy (Wiechman) Wittmuss, Mother Rose (McKeane) Wittmuss, Father Gerald Wittmuss, Sister-in-law Katherine (Potter) Wittmuss, his 3 sisters Verna, Juanita and Shirley Wittmuss as well as 2 siblings that passed in their first year of life.

Richard left behind his three children, 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Maria (Wayne) Truchan and their two sons Tyler and Christopher. Andrea (Bill) Gregory and their two daughters Brooke (Kyle) Armstrong and daughter Ellie; Kelsey (Alec) Keller and two sons Wilder & Waylon. As well as his brother Gerald (Lowell) Wittmuss, sister Delores (Hoover) Wittmuss, sister Sharon Wittmuss, and many nieces and nephews.

Dick and Peggy’s remains will be interned together at the Evergreen Cemetery in Anita Iowa on a future date to still be determined.
