Richard Charles Wohlenhaus, 63, of rural Atlantic, Iowa, died Friday, May 13, 2016, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.
Richard was born April 3, 1953, in Atlantic, Iowa, to Richard Frederick and Betty Joan (Mercer) Wohlenhaus. He attended Atlantic High School graduating with the class of 1971. He attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. On May 27, 1972, he was married to Nancy Andre in St. Charles, Iowa. Richard had lived in the Atlantic, Cumberland, Griswold and Lewis, Iowa, area all of his life, where he farmed for many years. Later, he was a Security Supervisor with the Transportation Security Administration at Eppley Air Field in Omaha, NE until June of 2013.
He was a lifelong member of St. John's United Church of Christ near Griswold, Iowa, where he served as a past secretary of the church board. Richard was also a member and past secretary of the Cumberland Farmers Co-op, a Bear Grove Township Trustee, and a member of the Cass County Zoning Board. He enjoyed football, muscle cars, coin collecting, bird watching and gardening.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Betty Wohlenhaus.
Richard is survived by his wife, Nancy Wohlenhaus of Lewis, IA; a daughter, Jennifer (Stephen) Wohlenhaus Bloomberg of Des Moines, IA; a son, Neil Wohlenhaus of Ankeny, IA; a granddaughter, Vanessa Bloomberg; uncles, Jesse (Maurine) Mercer of Red Oak, IA and Glen (Shirley) Mercer of Fort Worth, TX; his mother-in-law, Doris Andre of Des Moines, IA; a sister-in-law, Karen Knapp of Clive, IA; and numerous cousins and relatives.
Visitation with family will be from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2016, with a memorial service to be held at 11:00 a.m., at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, IA. Private family burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to the American Diabetes Association.
