Robert "Bob" Walter Nymand, Sr.

Robert “Bob” Walter Nymand, Sr., the son of Walter Christian and Emmy “Amy” (Schnoor) Nymand was born April 27, 1930, at his parents’ home west of Brayton, Iowa and died October 12, 2020, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 90 years, 5 months, and 15 days.

Bob was baptized and confirmed at the Oak Hill Lutheran Church west of Brayton, Iowa. He attended rural school Oakfield Township #5 west of Brayton and then graduated from the Exira High School with the Class of 1948. Bob then helped operate the family farm before attending Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the National Guard, where he served for more than 12 years.

On October 16, 1955, he was united in marriage to Patricia Neff at the Presbyterian Church in Maryville, Missouri. They were blessed with two sons: Robert, Jr. and Jeffrey. Bob grew row crops and raised livestock for many years until he retired. They moved into Brayton in 1985, where he enjoyed his home until moving to the Exira Care Center in 2015.

Bob was an active member of the Brayton Lutheran Church where he served on several committees and was President of the church council several times. He also served as the Brayton Mayor for many years. He was on the Exira Community School Board, was a member of the FHA board, and was a member of the Audubon County Beef Producers. He enjoyed cooking and even took a class in Chinese cooking and became quite proficient in stir-fry. He was very health conscious and would do calisthenics and walked the bike trail with Rick Hansen every morning. Bob was an avid reader and could often find him reading a Louie Lamoure or Daniel Steel novel.

Preceding him in death were his son, Jeffrey Nymand; his daughter-in-law, Sue Nymand; his parents; his sister, Beverly and husband Thomas Payne; his nephew, Dr. T.J. Payne; and his sisters-in-law, Louise and husband Sterling Barton and Betty Jean and husband Leroy Wiltz.

Survivors include his wife, Pat Nymand of Atlantic, Iowa; his son, Rob and wife Ronell Nymand of Brayton, Iowa; his grandson, Jesse M. Nymand of Westminster, Colorado; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family will greet friends on Thursday, October 15, 2020 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. with a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa. There will be open visitation Thursday from 8:00 A.M. until the time of the family visitation. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in the Oak Hill Cemetery west of Brayton, Iowa. The honorary casket bearers will be Clark “Sam” Kauffman, Willis Nelson, Leroy Hansen, Arnie Bintner, Jerry Jensen and Dan Jensen. The Kessler Funeral Home in Exira is in charge of his arrangements.

The family has requested all visitors to wear masks to the visitation.
