Roger Eddy

Roger Dean Eddy, 92, of West Burlington, Iowa, formerly of Anita, Iowa, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, at Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born June 4, 1926, in Sibley, he was the son of Leslie C. and Ruth (Fuller) Eddy. On August 22, 1948, he married the love of his life, Janece Watson, at Anita Methodist Church.

Growing up in Sibley, Iowa, he loved delivering newspapers, playing marbles, junior baseball and Boy Scouts.

Mr. Eddy enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 during his senior year at Sibley High School in 1944. After graduating, he served during World War II as a gunner’s mate aboard a PT boat in the South Pacific and took part in 35 combat patrols before being honorably discharged in 1946, when he moved to Anita.

He owned and operated Eddy’s Clothing in Anita until retiring in 1983. He and Janece remained there until 2015, when they moved to West Burlington to be closer to family while he battled Lewy body dementia.

He was a member of Anita Methodist Church, Anita Chamber of Commerce, the Volunteer Anita Fire Department, American Legion Post 210, Friends of Lake Anita, Crestwood Hills Golf Course and Anita Senior Bicycle Group.

He enjoyed walking the circle, helping his neighbors, scooping snow, going for morning coffee, fishing, pheasant hunting, working on the farm, golfing, playing pingpong and time with family.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years; two daughters, Deborah Winkelman (Ken) of Maple Grove, Minnesota, and Julie Niehaus (Michael) of Burlington; five grandchildren, Jeremy Winkelman (Jennifer) of Waconia, Minnesota; Andrea Niehaus of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Stephanie Niehaus (Micah Jackson), Michaele Niehaus-Steffensmeier (Zackary) and Nicholas Niehaus, all of Burlington; and six great-grandchildren, Andrew and Tyler Winkelman, Adrian Benson, Jack Gaston, and Gabriel and Tessany Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, aunts, uncles, cousins and great-grandson Keagan Niehaus.

Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Anita, Iowa.

Services for Mr. Eddy will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 13, 2018, at Anita United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. A luncheon at the Anita Community Center will follow the committal service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established at a later date.
