Roma Anne Murray, the daughter of Carl G.F. and Mabel (Madsen) Petersen, was born July 8, 1934, at her parents’ home in Audubon, Iowa and died March 10, 2015, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 80 years, 8 months, and 2 days.
Roma was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. She attended Audubon Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1952.
On February 18, 1954, she was united in marriage to Merlon “Snooker” Dean Murray at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. One daughter Tina was born to this union. They moved to Oklahoma where they lived while Merlon finished his tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. They returned to Iowa and settled in Gray, where they lived for several years before moving their house to Audubon. Roma was employed as a waitress at the T-Bone Club and Dinner Bell in Audubon for several years. She then was the bookkeeper for Murray’s Lime and Rock. Later Merlon started his own business and Roma continued as the bookkeeper for Snooker Murray’s Rock Service. After her nephew, Craig Murray, bought the business, she continued as bookkeeper until she retired. Roma and Merlon enjoyed traveling and loved going fishing in Minnesota. Merlon died on October 9, 1991. Roma then spent much of her time with her best friend Pat Hansen. They enjoyed traveling, gambling, and finding new places to eat. Roma lived in her own home until she moved to the Friendship Home in 2012.
Roma was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. She enjoyed caring for her lawn, loved fishing, and enjoyed having coffee with her friends. But most important to her was her grandchildren and she loved attending all their activities.
Roma was preceded in death in addition to her husband Merlon “Snooker” Murray; by her parents; her brother Donald and wife Norma Petersen; her brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Roger Hagedorn, Rolland “Jack” Murray, Russell “Snowball” Murray, Lyle “Louie” Murray, Marge “Tootie” and husband Mick Nissen, and Clarence “Casey” Rasmussen.
Survivors include her daughter Tina and husband Bruce Andersen of Audubon, Iowa; her grandchildren Alicia Andersen of Audubon and special friend Matt Matz of Des Moines, Iowa, and Derek and wife Rachael Andersen of Audubon; her sister Deanna Hagedorn of Manning, Iowa; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Ethel Rasmussen of Audubon, Bobby and wife Janet Murray of Nebraska, Betty and husband Lew Buckner of Audubon, Lois and husband Owen Macke of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Doris and husband Dallas Bald of Audubon, Inga Murray of Harlan, Iowa, and Marlene and husband Kent Walters of Audubon; nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.
The honorary casket bearers will be Rick Murray, Gary Murray, Kenny Williams, Brian Andersen and David Andersen. The casket bearers will be Bill Murray, Craig Murray, Troy Hagedorn, Dan Nissen, Tim Andersen and Steven Andersen.
