Bert Rose

Roybert "Bert" Lee Rose, age 73, of Atlantic, IA, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA.

Bert was born in Auburn, Nebraska, to Wayne and Mona (Sondgrass) Rose. He attended and graduated from Auburn High School. After high school, he honored his country by serving in the United States Army and was honorably discharged after his time of service.

Bert married Susan Shallenberger in 1976, and they were blessed with four sons. He later married Kathie Anderson in 2006 and enjoyed many happy years of marriage.

Bert proudly carried mail for the United States Post Office. for over 25 years, from which he retired. Bert spent countless hours coaching his sons’ many sports teams and, in his spare time, DJ’d many weddings, many times treating the families at those events by singing a song for them. He worked hard every day of his life, and you would never catch him sitting idly by.

His pride and joy in his life was his sons and grandchildren, always being an outlet for love, a hug, and level-headed advice. His grandkids were always blessed with water balloon fights, hot tub soaks, sandboxes, and s’mores around his ever-present fire pit.

Many nights were spent at “Lucky’s.” He hosted weekly card nights for the guys and never missed a Nebraska Cornhusker football game. Go Big Red! He was the biggest fan around, and that is apparent in all of the memorabilia lining the walls of his man cave. He enjoyed many hobbies that he loved, with golf being at the top of that list. He had a love for cars, and that extended to his model car collection and his Mustang, where you could often catch him cruising the streets with the top down. Everyone that met Bert was met with love and acceptance. He was a loving husband and an even better dad.

Bert was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Mona Rose; and his brothers, Jerry and Richard Rose.

He is survived by his wife, Kathie Rose of Atlantic; son, Scott (Charis) Rose of Nebraska City, son, David (Trina) Rose of Atlantic, son, Jeremy (Jill) of Dakota Dunes, son, Nathan Rose of Atlantic, daughter Kari (Brian) Hansen of Anita, Jessica (Kevin) Newman of Atlantic.

A memorial service for Bert will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, July, 25, 2026, at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA, with a luncheon followed in the community room of the funeral home.

A public visitation with the family will prior to the memorial service starting at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home on Saturday.
