When she was in High School her parents retired and the family moved into Audubon where Shirley graduated from the Audubon High School with the Class of 1954. She then went to work at the First State Bank in Audubon. Shirley moved to Des Moines, Iowa and was employed as a bookkeeper at Bankers Trust until 1959 when she returned to Audubon.

In 1959 she was united in marriage to Dalton D. Hansen at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. Along with Dalton’s daughter Lorrie they were blessed with three more children Connie, Pattie and Corley. Shirley was the typical farmer’s wife, she helped Dalton operate the farm and made sure that the farm crews that helped them were well fed. After Shirley finished farming, she was employed by several area businesses which included Skelnar Publishing and Talbot-Carlson Inc. She then started working at the Friendship Home as a cook. Shirley worked for a number of years at the Friendship Home. Later she worked for Jumbo Jack’s where she assembled cookbooks until she retired in 2005. During retirement, Shirley helped her daughter care for her newborn twins.

Shirley was a member of the Hamlin Lutheran Church until it closed then became a member at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. She was also a member of the America Legion and VFW Auxiliaries.
