Other hobbies and side passions included raising miniature cattle, deer and shed hunting, pheasant hunting, being on the farm and helping those around him. He recently started raising purebred German Shepherds. He took great pride in his children, and their accomplishments as well, and could often be heard talking about them and his grandchildren.

Preceded in his death are his parents, Billie and Lena Mae Metheny; his brother, Sheldon Metheny; and a brother-in-law, Ron Kline.
