Steven Craig Riggs, 67, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2015, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE.

Steven was born January 13, 1948, in Atlantic, Iowa, to Robert Eugene and Joyce Eleanor (Engle) Riggs. He graduated from C&M High School in 1966. He attended and graduated from the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Steve was on active duty in the US Air Force for 9 years. He attended pilot training at Williams Air Force Base in Arizona where he flew T-38s. Steven was the number one pilot of his pilot training class. He was then stationed at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA where he flew the T-29 trainer. He was then stationed at a radar site, Clovis, New Mexico, then Murphy Dome in Alaska at another radar site for one year and then spending his final years of service at Peterson Field in Colorado Springs, CO where he flew the T-39 and escorted high officials and members of Congress from Colorado Springs, CO to Washington D.C.

On June 4, 1970, Steven married Terrie Schueler at the US Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel in Colorado Springs, CO.

He worked at Akins Building Center in Atlantic for 33 years. Steven was a past president of the Atlantic Boosters, a board member of the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce and he coached little league baseball.

Steven was a talented wood worker, an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Joyce Riggs and his in-laws, Russell and Betty Hines.

Steven is survived by his wife, Terrie Riggs of Atlantic, IA; daughters, Shannon Riggs and her husband Brian McKinney of Atascadero, CA and Sara Landholm of Waukee, IA; a son, Seth (Whitney) Riggs of West Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Griffin and Tyler Landholm and Jovie and Samuel Riggs; brothers, Jim (Sue) Riggs of Lewis, IA and Jon (Teri) Riggs of Fairmont, MN.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Steven's life will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2015, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Steve's name to the National Kidney Foundation or the American Diabetes Association.
