Thomas Young

Thomas Edwin Young, 86, of Adair, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at his home in Adair.

He was born June 18, 1930, at home in Adair County, Iowa, the son of William "Burt" and Mildred (Habatuka) Young. Tom attended school in Casey and graduated from Casey High School in 1948. He then attended Iowa State University graduating in 1951 after only three years. Tom lived his entire life in Greenfield, Adair and Guthrie counties. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Downing at the First Presbyterian Church in Adair. Tom and Marjorie made their home on a farm south of Adair.

Tom was a lifelong member of the Frist Presbyterian Church in Adair. He worked as a teacher and a farmer. Tom was a teacher at the Sully, Menlo, Cumberland-Massena, and Stuart high schools. He also was a professor at the Des Moines Area Community College. Tom had a great passion for both agriculture and teaching. Marjorie always said Tom had a blessed life as he got to do both the things he loved, teach and farm. Tom was also very interested in soil conservation and he operated his farms as a no till farm for many years. He was a man who was always very direct and to the point and had a very strong work ethic, which he taught his sons.

Preceding Tom in death were his parents, Burt and Mildred Young; his son, Scott Young; and his sister-in-law, Velda Young.

Surviving Tom is his wife, Marjorie Young of Adair, Iowa; his son, Terry (Susie) Young of Sunnyvale, TX; his granddaughter, Tera (Eddie) Clark of Edwardsville, KS; his great-granddaughter, Bailey Testerman of Edwardsville, KS; his sister, Betty Schmidt of Oakland, IA; his brother, Manley Young of Fontanelle, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, October 17, 2016, at the First Presbyterian Church in Adair, Iowa. Visitation will take place in the church fellowship hall during a lunch following the funeral service. A private family burial will take place in Sunnyhill Cemetery in Adair, IA.

The family prefers memorials, in lieu of flowers, to the Alzheimer's Association.
