Vera Elnora Dennis

Vera Elnora Dennis, the daughter of Jacob and Emma (Meyer) Bald, was born April 29, 1925, at her parents’ home in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, Iowa and died July 6, 2016, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 91 years, 2 months, and 7 days.
Vera was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township north of Gray, Iowa. She attended rural schools “Bunker Hill” in Audubon County then graduated from the Manning High School with the Class of 1942. She then was employed as a Nanny for several area families.
On May 4, 1947, she was united in marriage to Robert Leon Dennis at his parent’s home in Audubon, Iowa. They were blessed with five sons Russ, Ron, Randy, Roger, and Rod. They lived in Allerton, Iowa, Griswold, Iowa, Atlantic, Iowa, and Brayton, Iowa before moving to the Exira, Iowa area in 1959. During these years, Vera was a home maker caring for Bob and the boys. Later Vera and Bob owned and operated a Lunch Wagon until they retired and sold the business in 1992. Bob died April 20, 1995. Vera lived in her own home until she moved to the Exira Care Center in January of 2012.
Vera was a member of the Brayton Lutheran Church and a member of Church’s Keenagers Group. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Exira. Vera enjoyed reading the Bible, baking and cooking, and making quilts. She was an active volunteer and helped around the Exira Community especially enjoying the time she spent helping at Jane’ Green Thumb. Vera enjoyed babysitting the neighborhood children, but most of all loved spending time with her family.
Preceding her in death were her husband Robert L. Dennis; her parents; her brothers and sisters Fred and wife Mary Bald, Herman and wife Irene Bald, George and wife Ruth Bald, Emma and husband Albert Borkowski, Esther and husband John Habrel, Rose and husband Albert Rubel, Verna and husband Walter Bald, Irene Bald, Mary Bald and Ruth Bald; and her brothers-in-law and sisters-in law Eloise and husband Jens Madsen, and John and wife Mary Dennis.
Survivors include her sons Russ Dennis of Atlantic, Iowa, Ron and wife Christine Dennis of Bremerton, Washington, Randy and wife Bobbi Dennis of Crivitz, Wisconsin, Roger and wife Meleaia Dennis of Aurora, Colorado, and Rod and wife Christy Dennis of Waukee, Iowa; her grandchildren Shari and husband Keith Wede and Staci and husband Chris Johnson all of Round Rock, Texas, Brett Dennis and finance Samantha Burns of Omaha, Nebraska, Jennifer Dennis of Bremerton Washington, Cody Dennis of Denver, Colorado, Ryan Dennis of Des Moines, Iowa, Emily Dennis and James Dennis both of Ames, Iowa; 11 great grandchildren, 2 great, great grandchildren; her brother-in-law Carl and wife Betty Dennis of Audubon, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relative and many friends.
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Dwayne Ferguson on Saturday, July 9, 2016, at 11:00 A.M. at the Brayton Lutheran Church in Brayton, Iowa. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon, Iowa. The casket bearers will be Brett Dennis, Maison Weiss, Scott Houchins, , Rick Thompson, Tim Huegerich, and Bob Asberry, Jr. The family will meet with friends on Friday evening July 8, 2016, at 6:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa.
