Verna Louise Fett, 87, of Adair, Iowa, passed away Saturday, January 21, 2016, at The New Homestead in Guthrie Center, Iowa.
Verna was born February 3, 1929, on the family farm south of Casey, Iowa, to John Frederick and Hattie Bertha (Raduenz) Schmeling. She grew up in the Casey, Iowa, area and graduated from Casey High School in 1947. Verna attended teacher training in Denison, Iowa, and was a country school teacher at Walnut #3 near Casey before getting married. She had also worked at Mary's Cafe and OE Hayes Store in Casey prior to teaching.
She married Emerson Arnold Fett June 12, 1949, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Casey, Iowa. They lived on the family farm north of Adair until 1987, when she and Emerson moved to Adair.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair, the LWML, where she had held the office of president and secretary. Verna was also active as a Girl Scout leader and as a 4-H leader.
Verna loved gardening, flowers, raising chickens on the farm, playing cards "Give Me Five" and was known for her cooking and baking. She also loved her children's and grandchildren's activities.
She was predeceased by her parents, John and Hattie Schmeling; her husband, Emerson Fett; son-in-law, Phil Shimp; sister, Emma Laubscher; half-sister, Irma Weber; brothers, Max, Arnold, Clarence, John, Gilbert and Robert Schmeling; half-brother, Arthur Schmeling; and brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Those surviving Verna are her children, Darlene Fett of Vermillion, SD, Ervin (Shari) Fett of Ankeny, IA, Karen (Gordon) Shinn of Hamilton, IA, and Sandra Mickle of Adair, IA; grandchildren, Amy Fett of Urbandale, IA, Keith Shimp and his fiancé Chelsea Steward of Ames, IA, Matthew Mickle of Des Moines, IA, Derrick (Cortney) Keim of Pikeville, NC, Ed Shinn and Charlotte Shinn of Hamilton, IA; great-grandchildren, Madison Fett of Urbandale, IA, Ava, Emma and Kaden Keim of Pikeville, NC; a brother, Kenneth (Betty) Schmeling of Casey, IA; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation with family will be from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, January 26, 2017, with funeral services at 11:00 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Casey, IA.
Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Adair, IA.
Memorials may be made to The New Homestead or to the LWML of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair, IA.
