Walter Paul

Walter Junior Paul, age 87, of Atlantic, IA, and formerly of Anita, IA, passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.

Walter was born March 24, 1934, in Adair, IA, to Walter and Ella (Wedemeyer) Paul. Walter was known by friends as Junior and he graduated from Adair High School. He spent some time in the U.S. Army and returned to Iowa to help with the family farm. On August 25, 1973, he married Joye Steward Massey from Urbandale, Iowa. Together they farmed west of Adair for many years before moving to Atlantic.

Junior worked the farm for many years as an independent farmer, but over time leased out increasing acreage to other farmers and he went off to work at different endeavors in Des Moines and Atlantic. A few of Junior’s hobbies included golfing with Joye, assembling jig saw puzzles, playing cards with family and friends, and playing bingo in Anita.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Walter and Ella Paul; brother, Robert Paul; wife, Joye; and stepson, Tom Massey.

Walter is survived by his cousin, Kevin Wedemeyer and sons Paul and Lucas; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Massey Preston and husband John Preston; stepson, Michael Massey and wife Yolanda; granddaughters, Erin Armstrong and husband Chase, Lora Massey Bullock and husband David; grandson, Steven Massey and wife Nadia; great-granddaughters, Elsa Armstrong, Celia Armstrong, Noelle Massey; sister-in-law, Jean Steward; and many extended cousins.

Visitation will be from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. with a funeral service starting at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Adair, IA, with Rev. Kyle McBee of Zion Lutheran Church officiating.

Burial will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Adair, IA.

Memorials may be directed to the family and will be designated in memory of Junior at a later date.
