Wayne E. Elsberry, 77, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2018, at his home in Atlantic.
Wayne was born March 25, 1940, in Douglas Township, Audubon County, Iowa, to Virgil and Selma (Kienast) Elsberry. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Audubon on April 21, 1940, confirmed on April 26, 1953 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. He attended school in Audubon and graduated from the Audubon High School in 1957.
On December 30, 1959, Wayne married Eleanor Faye Kendig at Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa. They had lived in Atlantic and several other towns, before returning to Atlantic in 1976.
Wayne had worked at Walnut Grove and before coming to Atlantic managed several Walnut Grove feed depots in Guthrie Center, Osceola and Creston. He had also been a truck driver for 20 years.
He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Wayne served as an Elder, chairman and treasurer of the congregation, and a member of the endowment committee. He also taught Sunday school, Catechism classes, and enjoyed volunteering with the Men’s Club.
Wayne enjoyed tractor rides, golfing and attending the activities and events of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Cecil Kendig, mother-in-law, Margaret Kendig, step mother-in-law, Maxine Kendig, sister-in-law, Margaret Elsberry and a brother-in-law, Gerald Kallesen.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Eleanor Elsberry of Atlantic, IA; three daughters, Peggy Toft and her fiancé, Rick Thompson of Exira, IA, Sandra (Dana) Cooper of Atlantic, IA, Julie (Jim) Stubbs of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Brandon (Heather) Toft of Audubon, IA, Tara (James) Klocke of Dedham, IA, Elizabeth Toft and friend, Dan Mehman of Atlantic, IA, Jennifer (Christopher) Schriver of Omaha, NE, Shelby Cooper of Corning, IA, Derek (Jenna) Stubbs of Norfolk, VA, Logan (Gabby) Stubbs of Portland, OR, Nathan Stubbs of Des Moines, IA and Josh Stubbs of Des Moines, IA; great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Sullivan, and Scarlett Toft, Emma, Hannah and Brody Klocke, Fletchor Toft, Phineas Schriver, Ayden, Jordan, Silver, and Billy Stubbs; sisters, Barbara Kallesen of Council Bluffs, IA, Marlene (Larry) Schwab of Atlantic, IA, Mary (Bud) Korver of Council Bluffs; and a brother, Merle Elsberry.
Visitation with family will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa. Cremation will follow after the services and burial of cremains will take place in the Atlantic Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be left to Zion Lutheran Church.
