Dawna Lynne Hendricks Massie, 57, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2006, in rural Pottawattamie County, Iowa.
Dawna was born September 25, 1948, in Martinez, Contra Costa County, California, the daughter of Stanley and Dawna J. (Asay) Hendricks.
She was raised in Concord, California, and was a 1966 graduate of the El Cerrito, California, High School. Dawna then attended the Bryman Medical School in California and had worked as a Medical Assistant at various medical facilities.
On November 8, 1979, Dawna married James A. Massie in Fairfield, California. The marriage was sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on June 13, 1985. They moved to Iowa in 1986.
Dawna was an accomplished pianist, singer and guitarist and performed professionally for 8 years with her husband and with the family band for several years. She loved animals, nature, camping and traveling. She was always helping and watching over her neighbors and "mothered" everyone, human and animal.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and frequently played the piano in church.
Dawna is survived by her beloved ex-husband, James A. Massie of Worland, Wyoming; her mother, Dawna J. Hendricks of Rio Linda, California; two daughters, Lori and her husband, Mark Main of Atlantic, Iowa, and Amanda Schuler of Atlantic, Iowa; two sons, Aaron and his wife, Tena Massie of Underwood, Iowa, and U.S. Army Reserve Spc. Caleb Massie of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two brothers, Stanley Hendricks of Boise, Idaho, Roy and his wife, Kristen Hendricks of Antioch, California; a sister, N. Janell and her husband, Bill Cole of Thatcher, Arizona; her 12 "little angels" grandchildren; 11 nieces and nephews; as well as her dog, Ginger.
She was preceded in death by her father, Stanley (Poppy Goose) Hendricks and her paternal and maternal grandparents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 13, 2006, in the chapel at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa, with President Larry Larson of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating.
Visitation is scheduled for Monday evening, from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Hockenberry's.
Committal services and interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
