1930 Dorothy 2022

Dorothy Tibben

November 17, 1930 — November 8, 2022

Dorothy Ann (Marnin) Tibben, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, under St. Croix Hospice Care at Heritage House in Atlantic IA. Her family was blessed to have been able to spend her last days at her side. She was born November 17, 1930, near Adair Iowa, to Michael and Lelia (Plowman) Marnin. She was baptized on March 19, 1936, and confirmed on March 25, 1945, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair, Iowa. She attended rural school through the 8th grade and then attended high school in Adair, Iowa. She lived with Mr. & Mrs. Burr while attending high school doing housework, cooking and other chores to earn her room and board. She graduated in 1948.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Robert (Bob) Tibben on November 21, 1948, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair. They made their home on a farm east of Exira where Dorothy was a homemaker and mother. She was an avid gardener and seamstress. Even though she enjoyed these activities they were also an essential part of life. A favorite memory was getting new flannel pajamas for Christmas each year that she had made.

Dorothy joined St. John’s Lutheran Church NW of Adair where Bob was a member. She was an active member of Ladies Aid (now known as LWML). She also belonged to the neighborhood Garden Club and bowled on a women’s league at the Adair Bowl for many years. She and Bob enjoyed playing cards with the neighborhood card club and square dancing. After the kids were away from the nest, she took a job as a fry cook at the Redwood Steakhouse. In 1981 Dorothy and Bob were in a severe car accident that not only tested her endurance and perseverance but left her with ongoing mobility issues. Her strength continued to amaze us until the end.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters Janet (Fred) Klute of Atlantic, Virginia Tull of Centerville, and Kathy (Randy) Seiberling of Baxter; her siblings Phyllis Tomlinson of Adel, Don (Sharon) of Trenton, MO, Tom Marnin of Anita, Joe (Judy) Marnin of Atlantic, Phil Marnin (Barb Bell) of Anita, Chuck (Deb) Marnin of Anita and Jackie Eimers of Anita; grandchildren Sarah Zach (Kelly Spiker) of Lake City, Eric (Mindy) Nelson of Walnut, Carrie (Michael) Bauer of Audubon and Cheryl Eggert (Billie Ackerman) of Centerville, Chad (Dani) Klute of Hampton NE., and the others who always called her “Grandma”; twelve great-grandchildren and Nineteen great-great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Joyce Hinkel and son Vernon Tibben; grandchildren Jennifer Erb and Christopher Tibben; Brothers Clair Marnin and Francie Marnin; Son-in-law Chuck Cumming, Sisters-in-law Margaret Marnin and Esther Marnin and Bob Hook.
