Mr. Jeffery Van Ert

February 17, 1961 — April 16, 2023

Jeffery John Van Ert, 62, of Atlantic, IA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 16, 2023 at his home. He was born on February 17, 1961, in Sioux City, Iowa the son of Floyd Van Ert and Dorothy (Kint) Korver. Jeff graduated from Atlantic High School in 1980. Jeff continued his education at Central College, where he was on the golf team for one year.

After Central College, Jeff joined Brown’s Shoe Fit Company in Iowa and Nebraska, where he was trained in management. While in Nebraska, Jeff also joined the sales industry by selling manufacturing equipment throughout the United States and Canada. Jeff returned to Atlantic and partnered with his father in operating Van Ert Glass in 1992. Jeff later took over the business upon his father’s retirement until 2008, when he went to explore other career options.

On December 3, 1994, Jeff was united in marriage to Penny Atkinson at the United Methodist Church in Atlantic, IA. Jeff’s greatest passions included spending time with his family, golfing with his son, Grant, and his numerous mini Schnauzers. Other interests included bowling, fishing, Chiefs’ football (despite the house being divided between the Chiefs and Packers), as well as attending and supporting high school sporting events. He was most proud of his pride and joy, Grant, achieving a 299 in bowling, multiple hole-in-ones, and winning the Atlantic Little League Championship game in 1971-1972. Jeff loved his family. Their many travel adventures included vacations to the Wisconsin Dells, Black Hills, Adventureland, and other locations in support of Grant’s various activities.

Jeff is survived by his wife of more than 28 years, Penny, of Atlantic; his son Grant Davis of Phoenix, AZ.; his mother and stepfather Dorothy and Gary Korver of Clinton, IA; three brothers Gary (Jennifer) Van Ert SR. of Atlantic; Al (Bryce) Van Ert of Austin, TX, Aaron Van Ert of North Carolina; three sisters, June (Tom) Cruthis of Clinton, IA; Abby Van Ert of Des Moines, and Brandi (Kerry) Hartwig of Iowa Falls, In-Laws, Mary Atkinson, Jane (Tim) Hazen, and Marty Raiser. Jeff was best known as Uncle Buck to Gary II, Schope, Allison, Sam, Alex, Elle, Sela, Eli, Melanie, Tye, Kenna, Grant, Kaylan, Brad, and Kelly.

Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Van Ert, father-in-law, James Atkinson, and great-nephew Camden Van Ert.

Open house visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with the family present from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., on Friday, April 21, 2023, at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Jeff Van Ert Family in honor of him. They will be directed to many of his favorite local organizations and charities and may be mailed to the Schmidt Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 523, Atlantic, IA 50022.
