Lyle Eugene Chesnut, age 91, of Anita, IA, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2021, at Heritage House in Atlantic, IA.

Lyle was born October 18, 1929, in Adair County, IA, to Merle and Cecil Gladys (Keith) Chesnut. He grew up just south of Adair and graduated from the Adair High School with the class of 1947. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict from January 1952 through August 1953. He was a member of the 5th Regimental Combat Team.

After an honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Adair County and married Darlene Joanne Marquis on December 27, 1954, at the United Methodist Church in Atlantic, IA. Together they farmed southwest of Adair for 10 years. To this union one son and three daughters were born. In 1963, they moved to Anita and continued farming for over 40 years until their retirement.

Since retirement, Lyle remained active being a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. Lyle stayed involved in the community. He was a member of the American Legion Post 210 and local VFW, serving regularly with many activities, such as weekly American Legion Bingo, and many flag ceremonies and services. He enjoyed working on local projects such as the Community Walking Trail. Lyle also served on the Cass County Board of Assessment.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at the Hockenberry Funeral Home in Anita, IA, with Rev. Garry DeGeest officiating. Lunch will be held in the Anita Community Building following the memorial service. A private burial will be held at Sunnyhill Cemetery in Adair, IA.

Open visitation with family present will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at the Hockenberry Funeral Home in Anita, IA.

Lyle is survived by his son, Alan (Rita) of Atlantic; daughter, Vickie (Mike) Michels of Dixon, IL; three granddaughters, Mindy (Sonny) Scadden of Maryville, MO, Stacy (Brett) Johnson of Atlantic, IA and Tara Michels of Waukesha, WI; greatgrandchildren, Kolby and Kaden Scadden of Maryville, MO, Kinsley, Kambry and Kyson Johnson of Atlantic, IA; two brothers, Dale (Marline) Chesnut of Elkader, IA, Ray Chesnut of Anita, IA; sisters-in-law, Janice (Delbert) Sheeder of Adair, IA, Jean Hall of Fontanelle, IA, Jeanette (Bill) Crees of Casey, IA, and Joyce Rochholz of Atlantic, IA.

Preceded in death is his beloved wife, D. Joanne Chesnut; twin daughters, Cindy J. and Cherie D. Chesnut; granddaughter, Nicole Michels; his sister, C. Claire Chesnut; brothers, Keith Chesnut, John Chesnut, Melvin Chesnut, Don Chesnut and Larry Chesnut; sisters-in-law, Arlene Chesnut, Jessie Chesnut, Marilyn Chesnut and Ardith Chesnut; brothers-in-law, Orville Sheeder, Meriel Hall and Harold Rochholz; nieces, Colleen Chesnut Tibben, Penny Scheeder Nier, Melodie Chesnut Rubel.

Memorials may be directed to the Anita Volunteer Fire Department, the Anita Library, or the Anita American Legion Scholarship Fund.
