1935 Margie 2023

Margie Herbert

August 22, 1935 — February 2, 2023

Margie Anne Herbert, age 87 passed away Thursday February 2nd, 2023, surrounded by her loving family at the Heritage House in Atlantic Iowa. Margie, the daughter of the late John (Jack) Hemsted and Mildred Watson-Hemsted-Weir was born August 22nd, 1935, in Atlantic, Iowa. Margie was raised in Atlantic where she attended school and later would reside on a farm outside of town with her husband.

On September 30th, 1952, Margie married Joseph Wayne Herbert in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple was blessed with one son and three daughters. Together they raised their family on a farm just south of Atlantic. Margie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic, the Cowbells, and a proud Red Hat Lady. In her earlier years she was a 4-H leader, a cook at the Heritage House and managed the Senior Haven in Cumberland. Following retirement, she loved to gather with her friends and play bridge and Bunko.

Margie spent many hours in the kitchen baking for those she loved. She found immense joy in preparing meals and baked goods for her friends and family. Margie loved to try new recipes and took great pride that many confided in her for cooking advice. When she wasn’t in the kitchen, she could be found doing the latest cross stitch pattern, crocheting baby blankets and hot pad holders, or working on a quilt. Margie was a woman of routine and looked forward to her weekly hair and nail appointments. She loved to be pampered and especially enjoyed the ice cream dates that followed her appointments.
Margie was a daughter, sister, wife, mom, and aunt, though her greatest title of them all was Grandma.

She is survived by her sister Julia Nelson of Atlantic, Iowa; daughter, Nancy Herbert of Marshalltown, Iowa; son, Joseph Dale (Joe) Herbert (Julie) of Atlantic, Iowa; and daughter Patricia Bissell of Atlantic, Iowa. She is also survived by her grandchildren Nathan (Yang) Brown; Jackson (Brooke) Bissell; and Samantha (Tyler) Wangsness. As well as her great-grandchildren Henry and Olivia Brown and Beckett and Jayden Bissell.

Margie was preceded in death by her parents Jack Hemsted and Mildred Watson-Hemsted-Weir and Dr. R. Basil Weir; her husband Wayne; daughter Ramona Jean; brother-in-law David Nelson; and great niece Holly Nelson.
