1931 Marjorie 2022

Marjorie Young

December 2, 1931 — December 30, 2022

Marjorie Young passed away at 2:00 am on December 30, 2022, at Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa where she has lived for approximately six years. Marjorie was the middle daughter of May and Glen Downing and was born on December 2, 1931.

Marjorie grew up on the family farm and attended Adair High School. She married Thomas Young, a student at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa on December 30, 1950. Marjorie worked in the campus bookstore as Tom finished his education. After graduation, they moved to Sully, Iowa where Tom started teaching agriculture. In 1952 they moved to Menlo, Iowa where Tom accepted an agriculture teaching job. Marjorie worked at various waitressing jobs during this time. Their first child (Terry) was born that year.

The couple started farming south of Adair (after his father’s death in 1956) on his parent’s farm at 200th Street and Delta purchasing the farm equipment and leasing the land. Tom continued to teach while farming. Marjorie loved farm life and worked outside--caring for livestock and operating farm equipment from the start. In 1958 they purchased a farm at 160th Street and Delta. That year their second son (Scott) was born.

That was the framework for their life—farming, teaching, and raising a family. Marjorie cared for livestock and grew a vegetable garden. She developed a hobby in flower gardening and grew many varieties of flowers. She was active in parental activities at the school and the Women’s Auxiliary at the Presbyterian Church in Adair.

Preceded in death were her parents May and Glen Downing, her husband Thomas Young, her son Scott Young, and sisters Irene Brentnall, Doris Hawthorne, Velma Lehman, Joyce Girkin, Kenneth Downing, and Lloyd Downing.

Survived by her sister Elaine Shoemaker, son Terry Young and wife Susi, granddaughter Tera Sue Clark and husband Eddie, and great-granddaughter Bailey Testerman.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church of Adair, IA. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will be held at Sunny Hill Cemetery. A reception will be held following the funeral service and simultaneously with the interment in the fellowship hall of the First Presbyterian Church.
