Ronald Feilmeyer

March 5, 1938 — November 22, 2022

Ronald William (“Ron”) Feilmeyer, 84, formerly of Atlantic, died peacefully at Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames, Iowa, with his family at his side. Ron is survived by his wife, Marlene, and children Frank (Vikki) Feilmeyer of Ames, Iowa, Mary (John) Roberson of Apple Valley, Minnesota, and Joan (Doug) Schrum of Marion, Iowa, and grandchildren Adam and Evan Feilmeyer and Skyler and Carly Schrum.

Ron was the son of Edward and Marcella (Loneman) Feilmeyer. He was born and raised in Guthrie Center, Iowa, where he was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith, attended school, and worked in the family hardware and furniture stores. Ron studied political science at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1960. Ron married the love of his life, Marlene Frances Bruening, on February 12, 1963, in Lake City, Iowa.

Ron found his calling at the University of Iowa College of Law, where he truly excelled and was a member of the Iowa Law Review staff. He graduated in 1966, with distinction, and immediately began work at the Jones, Cambridge, and Carl law firm in Atlantic. Ron loved the practice of law and particularly loved being a trial lawyer. He was a member of the American and Iowa State Bar Associations, the Iowa Trial Lawyers Association, and several other professional organizations. Ron was a member and chair of the Iowa Judicial Qualifications Commission. Ron retired from the Cambridge Law Firm and the practice of law after a 42-year career in 2008.

Ron loved big bands and ballroom dancing with Marlene. He loved to travel with his family, especially to national parks, and he was proud that he had visited all 50 states. He was religious about exercising, and he loved jogging and bicycling and spent many hours on trails, in spin classes at the YMCA, and taking part in RAGBRAI. Ron was an active member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic and a member of the Knights of Columbus as well as the Atlantic Lions Club.

Ron had a deep love of his country, serving in the National Guard, and he voraciously consumed political news. Ron served many years as a member of and chair of the Cass County Democratic Party Central Committee and enjoyed meeting and developing deep working relationships with local, state, and national political figures. He also served as a member of the Iowa State Capitol Planning Commission.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Marlene Ann Stangl, and twin brother, Robert Edward Feilmeyer.
