1950 Mrs. 2023

Mrs. Susan Steen

November 23, 1950 — January 14, 2023

Elk Horn, IA

Susan (Crazy Sue) Kay Steen passed away January 14, 2023, at Jennie Edmundson Methodist Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA, due to complications with renal failure, but her kids think she was finally done listening to Al’s (husband) stories.

Susan started her career as an RN at Jennie Ed Hospital until she met a man that was going to need full time care (Alan) for the rest of his life and promptly left nursing, but never stopped caring for others. Her heart was filled with creativity, enthusiasm, and she loved nurturing kids. She was an in-home daycare provider, preschool teacher, and for 22 years she was the school nurse/teacher’s aide at Fullerton Public School.

Susan was the proud grandma of 7 grandkids: Ashton, Emily, Garrett, Lily, Isabel, Gavin, and Natalie. Susan was the type of grandma that would get on the ground and play with her grandkids, jump in the pool holding their hands, and was constantly doing crafts and science experiments with them. Grandkids thought she was the best cook ever because everything she fed them came from the dessert menu and was the only adult that would take them to Golden Corral for all you can eat cotton candy and the chocolate fountain.

Susan was also an avid reader. It’s no secret, smut books used to be her favorite genre but after 50 years of marriage with Al, she switched to murder mystery books and forensic shows. Probably for research. And of course, if anyone knew Susan, they all knew how much she loved Halloween and anything macabre. She had a closet full of costumes and her idea of a family outing would be walking through a creepy cemetery telling ghost stories. She even wanted her ashes stored in a pumpkin cookie jar before being spread in the ocean.

To a devoted wife, loving mother, and “crazy” grandma this is the legacy we have from you! May your playful soul shine on!
She will sorely be missed and survived by her husband, Alan Steen, her Kids Nikki (John) Bricker, Nathan (Elizabeth) Steen, and Mindi Fincham; her seven grandkids, Ashton, Emily, Garrett, Lily, Isabel, Gavin and Natalie; and brother Wallace Killion.
She is proceeded in death by her parents Betty and Neil Killion.

No services are planned at this time as the Ocean off the North Carolina coast is calling her name. The Scmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA is caring for Susan and her family at this time and condolences can be sent at: schmidtfamilyfh.com or mailed to P.O. Box 523 in Atlantic, IA 50022
